John Dowell is a creator of wonderful, vibrant art using only salvaged material including old wallpapers, used postage stamps, timber offcuts from many sources, even including James Purdey gun stocks. John says “my work has always been created from what I have salvaged from the materials used in the construction of exhibition stands at antique and interior design shows, which I call “Scrapstrac”.

All work is backed by the London Evening Standard of the date the work was completed. All pieces can be hung all four ways (vertically & horizontally).

As an artist, he is completely self-taught and has not attended any art school or college. His main inspiration has been 20th Century British Art and simply by being British. He has been creating since he was a child. His work has been welcomed by the Antique and Interior Design industry and has flourished simply by word of mouth and can be found in many private house collections around the world.

He had a solo exhibition at the Chelsea Arts Club in 2022. John is British through and through and his art speaks volumes through his influences and observations to support that unique character.

John qualifies as an historic London Pearlie.
